Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am 37 years old and have a degree in Primary Education. I have been married to my husband Mr. D for 13 years. We have two amazing children who keep us on our toes – Monty aged 9 and Francesca aged 6. We have a naughty tortoise named Winston and two guinea pigs named Nibbles and Wiggles.
What did you do before joining Music Bugs?
I was a Primary School Teacher and worked in a Junior School. After having my son I went back part time but after having my daughter I decided I needed a change. I wanted to continue to work with children. My friend Leanne who owns the Music Bugs Southampton franchise suggested I look at running my own franchise. I attended a Discovery Day at head office and the rest as they say, is history.
What attracted you to Music Bugs?
I went to Music Bugs with my son Monty and he really loved it. After having my daughter I wanted a career that gave me more flexibility so I attended a discovery day and and decided the opportunity ticked all of the boxes.
What territory do you cover?
I cover Fareham, Portsmouth, Southsea, Gosport and the surrounding area.
What training and support have you received to establish your franchise?
When I first joined I received two days of intensive training in Swindon where head office went through everything from session plans to advertising and finance. I came away with a car loaded with equipment to start running my own Music Bugs Sessions. We have a franchisee forum which I have found invaluable over the 5 years I have been running classes. It’s an opportunity to collaborate with the rest of the network, share ideas, give help and support each other. We are a real team. I have calls on the phone with head office whenever I need them and we have an annual meet up which is fantastic for networking with the other franchisees and for training.
What future plans do you have for your business?
In the last 5 years I have expanded my business and I now run 16 sessions a week with the help of two fantastic class leaders and we regularly visit nurseries and school settings. In addition to my classes I provide children’s parties most weekends and our Christmas parties are massive! My plan is to expand further into my territory providing classes in more locations and just see where the next 5 years take me.
What do you enjoy most about being your own boss?
I love the flexibility I have. I can go and drop my children off at school and pick them up every day and still have a job that I enjoy. It’s very rewarding seeing your hard work pay off. Knowing that you started with maybe just 1 or 2 classes and then suddenly you have 16 classes running and sessions in nurseries it’s incredibly rewarding. Seeing the families in class enjoying the sessions and making friends is a real privilege.
And finally, what was your favourite nursery rhyme when you were a child?
My Nan used to teach me naughty songs when I was little or rude versions of nursery rhymes- which used to horrify my mum! But I think my favourite was ‘This Little Piggy’.
